Engine/Exhaust Knock or Spudder

Recommended Posts

Well I have a new noise. My car is making a noise after driving on the highway for 20-30mins. I don't hear it until I slow down on the exit. I would explain the sound as "a baseball card in a bicycle tire" kind of sound. It speeds up with higher speeds, and slows down at lower speeds. It's constant when sitting still. What's throwing me off is that it only does it when I get off the highway, once I drive in town to work for a little while it goes away. It's not easy to pin point, I would say exhaust but I may be wrong. Anyone have any thoughts?

The noise is constant and speeds up with acceleration and decreases when letting off. Just came in from checking the oil on the dip stick. Oil only goes to the middle dot. So it's not full. My gage says 58% oil life. Feel like I'm burning/losing oil here...hmmm

On the oil I'm not 100% sure as the dealer it the one who did the oil change, should be whats recommended. So just think, you rev the engine and it sounds like a card in a fan that speeds up with the engine. It doesn't do it all the time, when I go to record it doesn't do it. Damn thing sounds like a go kart after getting of the highway some days.

Either it consumed it or they never filled it, either way I bet the internals are now toast! I'm amazed that none of these will turn on an oil low pressure error when this stuff happens, you are number two that found no oil in the thing and yet, no CEL to alert you of the problem. Since you had it done at a dealer, there should be no arguments that something is drastically wrong!

I went out and bought Castrol EDGE 5W-20 Synthetic oil thats Dexos approved. Couldn't find dexos 5W-20 synthetic blend anywhere. The car took 3.5 quartz of oil. I'm beyond irritated and pissed with this car right now. I had to put oil in it just the avoid the engine locking up. No oil light...no CEL...no anything. Just the motor knocking insane. This is 3000 mile since my last oil change. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow, beyond pissed.

I hope it doesn't mess up my warranty by putting oil in but it ate/lost all of its oil in 3000 miles. Theres some SERIOUS issues! I have a video of what the engine was doing before more oil was put in it, may not be evidence enough but have to get the car to them and avoid the engine locking up or creating more damage. I'm starting to seriously consider trading it and taking the loss.

Probably a cracked valve, like what happened to some others on here, the pcv valve is stuck, or oil is leaking from somewhere. Take it to the dealer, tell them what happed, and cross fingers. If it's a cracked valve, there should be a fouled spark plug on the affected cylinder.

Seems like a lot of us are starting to experience this issue. There needs to be a re call or something. But while we wait for that to happen (yeah right) refer to this thread also. My engine was just making the same sound and had burnt a lot of oil and so far it seems like it's going to be a long game of waiting and repairing.

My plan, at least at this point, is to hope the dealer gets the engine running some what decent. Once they do I'm trading it. I understand that cars have issues here and there, it's part of owning a car. BUT I will have this car a year in 10 days and I've had; Valve Cover Gasket leak, a tire with a flat spot that they wouldn't replace, A/C not working or blowing warm air, recirculate flap not engaging correctly, engine knocking, engine completely running out of oil, and transmission losing power in mid drive. I can't imagine how much this car will cost me once it gets out of warranty. If this is year one I can't wait to see years 3, 4, or 5. Really liked the Spark but it's crazy how many issues there are. GM doesn't seem to be in a big hurry to fix any of the issues. Throwing the same parts that caused the issue isn't a solution.

They just want to get rid of you for a couple weeks! You would think the dealer would push for engine replacement, I bet it pays an entire day and I bet they can turn it loose in half a day.

I'd drive it like I stole it for that 500 miles!

I believe the build date is 11/12. Can't look right now as my car is covered in 8 inches of snow. I'm not going to drive it like I stole it until I find out if I'm trading it or not. I want it to sound nice and normal when they check it out to value it. If that doesn't pan out I'll take it to the dealers lot and do my best to replicate a Nascar race at Daytona around their lot.

It's strange that a car with several years of success in the rest of the world got messed up when they sent it here. Was it really worth the extra 2 horsepower to change the motor just for the USA market?

I did check my oil today, it was full but really black for only a couple thousand miles since the last change.

The sad part is I really loved the Spark and was an avid owner in talking about it and praising it. With in one year I had way to many issues to justify keeping it. I bought it thinking if it survived some of the countries it's been in then it SHOULD be very dependable. I was let down, I still went with Chevy, not because GM haha, but because my dealer is really awesome. I think one of the big issues with the Spark is many Chevy dealers have NO idea what their working on or the issues that are going on. Hard to fix problems when you don't even know the exists. I really hope the Spark improves over the years. I really hope everyone gets a car they thought they were buying at some point. I got $9,500 trade in, with the amount of problems my dealer knew it had I consider myself lucky to have got that. I hope everyone has better luck going forward, I'll always remember the Spark as my first car.

Well guys, here's another update on Silvia:

I got it back 4 days ago now. The first thing I checked after getting her was the oil level. It was topped off and the information center said oil life was 73%

In those 4 days I've driven somewhere between three and four hundred miles, half of which have been on the freeway doing speeds of 60-80. I checked the oil at the end of today and it appears to have burned through about a quart of oil already. The level on the dipstick only came to the second dot. My plan is to beat on it a little more and take it back to the dealer in hopes of getting the new engine I deserve.

I love my Spark. It was my first new car, I was able to get it entirely on my own, and I planned on making it a fun little daily driver. But so far it just hasn't been reliable and it feels like I really got the short end of the stick. I've already taken my car in 3 times for repairs/issues and I've only had it since November.

I'm just going to keep wishing for the best. I still love the car and don't want to have to get rid of it. So let's hope they'll replace this engine without too much hassle so I can finally try to enjoy my car. I also wish the best of luck to anyone who has to go through this. Hopefully GM will notice this eventually, and hopefully the dealers everybody is getting their Spark's from will start learning about the car. Because I know my service writer told me I had the first Spark he'd seen in there.
