Still, to let them mess with my car, they would have to get me better mileage and not ruin my warranty. If they could do both, I'd let them use mine.

I actually live within an hour from there, but I bought this car for economy not power or performance and it has a long warranty. Even though FREE is great, I'm still pretty hesitant.

Ram Air Intake - Using Fog light location
NOMAD replied to Shane Duus's topic in Accessories & Modifications
Nice catch on ebay. Really, you don't need to do the hole route. Gravity works great and so do air filters. I've had a much lower to the ground and much more aggressive custom ram air setup on a different car for years, and have NEVER had a single problem with stuff getting up into the air box. Maybe a little dirt, but the filter won't let that through anyway. Personally, I'd just cut the hole open. Please post pics when you are done and also do some before and after testing of mileage to see if it improves with the ram air mod. Thanks -
I'm really not sure. What I think is it is winter blend locally. When I filled up in NW Michigan about 1/3 of the way into my round trip, I'm guessing that was NOT winter blend, which accounted for my best ever fuel economy.

New best mpg for me with the cowl / cold induction and the wheels taped over. Did a trip from SE Michigan to NW Michigan and back in one day, 455 miles. Average air temp, 50. Average speed, 63.1. About 70% at 75 mph and 30% at 60 mph. According to the car, I averaged 40.4 mpg. According to fuelly.com, the tank of gas I used on the way home took me 319 miles on 7.704 gallons, for an average of 41 mpg.

According to Fuelly.com my last tank was 319 miles on 7.704 gallons, for an average of 41.00 That was about 70% at 75 mph and 30% at 60 mph. Two stops. Other than that, straight highway.

So far, so good on the cowl. No water in the air box at all, despite lots of rain. Perhaps a slight power increase and a slight mpg increase. Tough to say with the weather changing so much and such a lack of consistency in my driving distances, routes and speeds.

Not pretty, but it should direct more cold air directly up to the snorkel. I'll probably slap some tape on there too, to smooth the curve from the black deflector to the painted steel. None of this will probably accomplish anything, BUT, it also can't hurt either.
-
Sure, I'll take a pic later or tomorrow. It's just a pre-cut wood shim. I shoved it down vertically at the far left of the opening if facing the car. It pushed that flat black plastic deflector in. I realized, with a little hunk of cardboard, to the right, I could push it in even further.
-
I was looking at what you did with the hose, but it looks like it really pinches down where it goes between the painted front end and the steel frame? Is that just an optical illusion, or is it really that pinched? I was screwing around and folded up a tiny piece of cardboard and used that and a wood shim to force the flat black deflector behind the grille back towards the engine a bit. That opens up the airflow a little bit through the grille, hitting the deflector and then shooting up to the rubber seal for the snorkel. If you notice the way the flat black, vertical, air deflector is from

Nice work. It seems like this engine really likes the cool, fresh air, not warm air.

Some new Appearance, Functional and MPG mods

I paid $93.95 on ebay with free shipping. -
I haven't done any conclusive testing, but it seems like I get significantly higher mileage when I have more people / weight in the car. Since aero trumps weight in most cases, I wonder if the lowering effect of having extra people in the car results in a more aero car and hence better mileage? Where I live, it is quite flat and I do a lot of highway driving at 75 mph. The aero effects of being lowered would be more significant at those speeds than at say 50 mph, I would think. I guess I could throw a bunch of weight on the floor and see if I get better mileage, compared to just driving ar

Have you noticed any gas mileage increase since lowering? I ask because I seem to get better mileage with more weight in the car, which in effect also lowers the car. Aero trumps weight in most cases. Thanks.

tommyspark, do you remember which adapter you have? ebay link? I like the idea of one that shuts off with the car. Thanks. -

Do you think the app would fine with a several year old Android phone that isn't being serviced by any carrier? It's just sitting around in a drawer right now. Thanks. -
Thank you

My bad, "torque" was what you were saying. Is that a software program?
-
Tommyspark, what is this "TURBO" you keep referencing? Thanks
-
Well, it probably doesn't relate, but I know that the factory MAF for LS1 engines were good to 600 hp, even though the engines from the factory were under 400. We could do a lot of modification to the engine and keep the factory MAF on those engines. Heck, the factory MAF was ultra superior to the aftermarket ones.

psquare75, I do that myself, but trying to get my wife or kids to do it is an exercise in futility. -
Tommyspark, with the way you are approaching it, it's a good idea to keep both ends open to prevent suction in the event of getting submerged. That being said, the idea of cutting open the fog light hole and taking the air from there would be the best bet, right? All fresh air, way away from the manifold. If you took all of your air from there and none from the factory snorkel, you'd probably get your best IAT temps? But, then the worry of sucking in water. Heck, up here, I'd be worried about plugging the hole with snow.

Lastly, is I taped over the wheels with aluminum tape. Before I tackle the challenge of mounting some Mooneyes wheel covers on, I want to prove that there is some mpg gain to be had with smooth, solid wheels. I actually think that the tape doesn't look that bad, especially at a bit of a distance. So far, it is very inconclusive if there is going to be any mpg gain.
