Trancer07 30
Wow man! That looks really awesome! I hope that stuff extends the life of the exhaust system by a few years. Was it hard to do? Did you have to disassemble the exhaust piping to paint it? Edited April 26, 2013 by Trancer07
Greg_E 211
So it isn't really ceramic coating then, just very high temperature paint. I've used this on the muffler on my motorcycle, it doesn't last worth anything. Wish I had realized that they didn't even paint the exhaust when I bought it, I would have grabbed a couple cans of VHT paint and sprayed it a long time ago. A real ceramic coating would have been nice, but the stuff is exceptionally expensive, $100 for about three feet of exhaust header for my motorcycle. Trancer07 30
Yikes! I definitely will not be using this, then. It's just so crazy that you guys have to do this to save your exhaust system. My cavalier is 11 and a half years old, 157700 miles and just now starting to have some exhaust problems. My mom had a 1998 dodge caravan that ran 500,000 miles over 8 years with the original exhaust system (minus the cat) and still sounded fine when she got rid of it. I don't know if it was rusty or not though. :/ But, in this day and age, there should be NO REASON why an exhaust system should last less than 5 years even in the salty wintery mess of the midwest. Now, if this was 1973, that might be a different story. Edited April 26, 2013 by Trancer07
bluer101 241
I'm not doing anything to mine. If it fails down the road Chevy can fix it under warranty. If its out then just fix it, not a deal breaker. Besides I'm going to replace mine as soon as Chevy releases the Z spec body kit, hurry up already.
70-yenko-nova 12
its got ceramic shit in it. Their old stuff was garbage this stuff is little better no disassembly and motorcycle parts are always overly expensive my 1 3/4 headers on my 408 price of header AND coated was under 500 lol
austex04 48
I'm surprised they didn't use a stainless exhaust system. I learned cars were disposable in the rust belt, Hondas appeared to be some of the worst. I guess when it's time to replace exhaust parts, you could upgrade at that point. Trancer07 30
its got ceramic shit in it. Their old stuff was garbage this stuff is little better...That's good to know. Are there any garages/body shops that actually do this as a service? I'm afraid to find out how much it would cost.
Greg_E 211
It has stuff in it, but it is not a real ceramic coating. That stuff would burn right off the headers on my motorcycle, even through the header wrap (because it did). The only things that really withstand the heat are real ceramic exhaust coating and header wrap insulation. Some powdercoats will survive on the muffler of this motorcycle. The real ceramic reduces a huge amount of heat transfer, but it must be sprayed on similar to powder coat, and then melted in a kiln like oven (again similar to powdercoat). Trancer07 30
From what I've been reading at other forums, the rust on you guy's exhaust system is strictly surface rust. It might take several years for it to actually get holes. Short trips (this is generally a "short trip" car) apparently causes the development of rust as well since the condensation in the piping doesn't clear out all the way. When people start reporting actual exhaust leaks after only a year or so, then we have a SERIOUS problem. Edited April 27, 2013 by Trancer07
70-yenko-nova 12
mine was cured and has been on the header without flaw for around 250 miles. new trans coming in.. pissed at my dealer for letting my car get hit in their parking lot and saying it didn't happen there so now im having them send me 36 hours of camera footage to watch myself... fucking hate new vehicles.. this is why i normally don't buy new vehicles.. completely devirginized this spark and makes me want nothing to do with it anymore. Greg_E 211
I said it in another thread, IMO most dealers are buildings filled with thieves. That could maybe get changed to some dealers but I'll hold that judgement until I find one that actually gives a damn and is honest. It may only be that the upper level people are the problem. jibb3r
bluer101 241
Dealers don't make much off the sale but the warranty and service. I only bring mine vehicles in if its a big problem. Normally you bring cars in for one problem and endup with a few more. Sorry about your car getting hit at the dealer.
70-yenko-nova 12
yeah ive lost all interest... the chevy district specialist is supposed to call today because the chevy dealership back home (as Greg said is one of those big dealerships.. that has REAL people not thieves in it (or atleast not to me) they told me run up chain of command and call GM headquarters let them get aware. They called the dealership while i was on the phone with GM HQ they put me on hold to call the dealer (good shit right there i was impressed) Hopefully it gets sorted. Otherwise next time I might not dodge that 6 point buck like i did last night.
malibuguy 14
Why paint the exhaust? Its 409 stainless with an aluminized coated 409 stainless muffler. It will last pretty much the lifetime of the car. 409 will develop a scale but doesnt rot out

I guess for some reason, it just looks worse than it actually is. It's a part of the car you don't really see anyway. Here's a quote from a website about 409 stainless about corosion: Grade 409 resists atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. A light surface rust will form in most atmospheres; this rust retards further corrosion but makes the surface undesirable for decorative applications. malibuguy 14
Im an exhaust fabricator for a living. Catalytic converters produce a little acid as a byproduct which eats regular mild or aluminized coated steel within a few years. So all manufacturers use at least 409ss for their exhausts. Usually the germans use 304.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks that. I had a $300 Escort radar detector taken from a vehicle I had in for service a while back. The owner didn't ague the fact, just cut me a check. Must not have been the first time! pissed at my dealer for letting my car get hit in their parking lot and saying it didn't happen there so now im having them send me 36 hours of camera footage to watch myself... austex04 48
Simple rule, don't leave anything in your car that you want to keep when you get it back, including change, iPod, sunglasses, etc. As far as your car getting damaged, that's something that you could end up having to take to arbitration or small claims court, depends on how the dealer and GM customer relations deals with these matters. Maybe we should all be taking pictures of our cars before they go in for service?
Greg_E 211
The muffler is without question not any kind of stainless steel! Pictures to prove it in another thread about rust.

Must not have been the first time!Interested to hear the outcome of this one! Well.. GM's district specialst is involved in this and will be calling me on Wed. I ran it up the chain of command because I told them then 3 days later they kinda told nothing happened in the their lot... and then fed me the "well if your car did get hit here it's kind of like a Walmart parking lot if you get hit there Walmart doesn't cover it" to which my reply was "The same way I'm responsible for your loaner car is the same way I'm making you responsible for my car. I didn't have it in my possession it was in YOUR possession YOU had MY keys YOUR guys were driving MY car...." the subject changed from there... anyway.. I will be waiting anxiously and BTW the black was also cuz it looks cool.. JDM yo.. I'm just kidding.
malibuguy 14
The muffler is without question not any kind of stainless steel! Pictures to prove it in another thread about rust. As far as I can see...no picture of the muffler...but your flange is rusting. Thats pretty typical...most lower end cars use plain steel for flanges. Nissans and infinitis are notrious for flange rot/breakage due to plain steel material. I fix usually 1-4 a week. The muffler would fall off in 2-3 years if it werent stainless.
