Phil_Can 2
What is the top speed of the Spark? Has anyone topped out their sparks yet? I got mine up to about 92 but I was in kinda heavy traffic so I couldn't actually top it out. I was just curious how fast my little guy can actually get to before the governor kicks in. Also does anyone know what the top speed would be if you took off the governor?
Greg_E 211
As far as I know, the only limiting factors are horsepower and wind resistance. It should break 100mph without any real problems and might even push past 110mph.
Trancer07 30
This car doesn't have a governor on it? I'd be surprised if it didn't. I've found you can usually tell the top speed of a car from the type of tires that are recommended for this car. From what I've read in Car and Driver Magazine, the top speed is supposed to be 90 MPH, which I believe is wrong. Another person I talked to online said he got his spark up to 105. He didn't specify if he was going down a hill or not though. Frick, the dang thing has a speedo that goes up to 120!! My cavalier is governed at 106. Greg_E 211
With 84 horsepower (engine crank shaft) there is only so much push against the wind. I would expect the Spark to max out in fourth and fifth gear at about the same number, and the next good breeze will see it airborne.
Phil_Can 2
Was able to get mine up to 95 today. Just wasnt enough stretch of road. So frustrating because I just wanna know what my little guy tops out at.
Trancer07 30
I suppose maybe it just uses "nature's governor". Around 100 MPH is plenty fast enough for this vehicle, IMO. Edited January 23, 2013 by Trancer07

AlexBarsan 10
Spark 2012 in Mexico: 180kms/h about 112 mph
Trancer07 30
Spark 2012 in Mexico: 180kms/h about 112 mph Wow. That's impressive! So much for 90 MPH being the top speed according to the magazine article I read on this car. Edited February 22, 2013 by Trancer07
Phil_Can 2
Yeah the other day I hit 104 in mine. Ran out of real estate so Idk what it could have gotten to.
70-yenko-nova 12
I think I'll safely try a top speed run one of these days... I'd like to have gotten it lowered first but o well see what the lil bugger can do I've gotten 105ish myself.
70-yenko-nova 12
As promised.
Greg_E 211
Is that the trip meter or odometer? If it is the odometer at 993 miles then you need to put a few more miles on it before it is ready for that type of driving, right around 2000 is where most of us see the fuel mileage stabilize at the higher numbers, so I would assume that top speed runs should also be after that happens. How did it feel at that speed? Dori
70-yenko-nova 12
It felt decently solid as long as you didn't even slightly touch the wheel ... You looker at the wheel wrong it kinda jerked at that speed .
mrtwiggy 2
i managed to get mine up to 112(ish) on the highway. lol was at 1 in the morning so no one on the road. my car had 14000 miles on it at the time. it drove very smooth but the steering is EXTREMELY twitchy at that speed. be very careful not to jerk when going that fast. mpg went down to about 19 and my rpm was pushing 6k, so I'm pretty sure thats going to be about the top speed these cars will go before the gov kicks in. Hobo1 8
I've only put mine to 80mph. This is a tiny motor and I would rather not break something. Hell I even think 70mph at 3200rpms is high. Wish this car had a 6th gear though.
ValorHeart 1
70-80mph is the maximum i drive my spark, it feel prittey weak acceleration above this speed, also don't like to take the gas pedal all the way down so won't break anything
tommyspark 24
I've never had either one of ours past 85..... not exactly the car I want to be driving at these high speeds
austex04 48
I do take mine occasionally on the toll road, if I'm down that way and the traffic is bad I pay not to drive in it. That toll road has a 85mph limit, so I go 90 on it, I actually am comfortable going that fast in this car, I only found it twitchy in strong crosswinds. The reason why I don't use the tollway much is because I have to pay nearly $10 to use it, and my mpgs drop to 30, I can get the same or better in a larger car, like a Cruze or Elantra, which are much more aerodynamic. The Spark only has the advantage in the city, under 65mph, and isn't the best choice for those like me that do more interstate miles at the high speed limits in this state (TX). Greg_E 211
It's really only happy (fuel economy) at about 55.
Hobo1 8
My commute to work is 46 miles round trip. Car sees that 4 times a week. Never going over 70mph. Only time I got it to 80mph was to pass a semi that was spewing corn all over the road (and to catch up to my friend's supercharged Cavalier on the way to a car meet). mcl 3
GPS - 176.05 KM/H (109.39mph) around 5.000 - 5.500rpmis not the top speed... Edited June 28, 2014 by mcl
Shane Duus 6
man...that auto trans keeps revs HIGH! the CVT at 75mph is only at about 28-3000 RPM......I have had mine up around 95mph...Ill have to push her one day and report....
Bangin4 1
I've had my 103 but shits down at
hardstyleNL 0
The European LS bifuel has a top of 146 km/h which is 91 mph for those with the (stupid) imperial system ;p And that's on compressed gas instead of regular petrol
