Will the starter engage if the car is running?

Recommended Posts

Do you think I could have harmed my starter or flywheel? I accidentally tried to start my car while it was already running due to loud music and distracting passengers. I have a 2016 automatic LS model with a manual turn key start. I don't recall hearing a grinding noise so I was wondering if there is an electronic fail safe mechanism that doesn't allow the starter to engage while the car is running. Does anyone know if that's the case?

The key switch just goes to the BCM and ECM. Tells the car you want to start it. Then the computer engages the starter relay, etc. Turn the key all you want. It won’t crank the engine if it’s already running, though it will power off the stereo and the lights, like it does when you actually start it.

You also don’t need to hold the key till the engine “catches” and let it go when the engine fires up. Quick flick of the wrist is sufficient, and the computer starts the engine for you.
