The shifter lever shaft has a very knurled end (like a hand ratchet) and the knob is 'melted' onto it.

Either yank..

Or do what I did and use a Dremmel tool with a cutoff wheel in several locations on the knob and slice it up like a pizza to get it off. Cover your interior first.

The more elegant way will be to modify the end where it goes to cables forward at the transmission. Can't really see the part from the top so I haven't looked into it yet, but we should be able to change the size of the shift shaft to cable interface to gain the required amount of motion making the normal throw nice and short. It's all great until we get the part and start designing, and this part was not shown in the online parts suppliers that I can find.
