Most of the common and user serviceable codes are in your owners manual...mostly lamps and common CEL codes. There are some web resources that go into more detail such as http://www.obd-codes.com/sitemap.php

Best thing to do when a code pops up is to find info on that particular code. Many codes are not displayed other than a CEL light on or flashing. Most are codes that are not user serviceable and can only be read with an OBD 2 reader tool and better handled by a trained mechanic..codes that are displayed are handy for lamps that burn out and other user items. For example a CEL (check engine light) can be a simple thing like open gas cap, or more complex such as engine combustion problem etc. Hope this points you in the right direction...
