Just bought used 2013, only has 1 key

12 posts in this topic

We just bought a used 2013 Spark LT from a rental company. It only came with one key. It has the keyless entry/key all-in-one. I assume I have to get the whole unit from the dealer. With proof of ownership?

Am I on the right track?

Look forward to browsing the forum more!

Correct, I would call a dealership, to get the specifics, though. This way you will be fully armed when you get there.

Yes sometimes they can be so specific as to proof

If you take them your registration with your name on it and ID showing the same name you should be fine. The rental place should have given you both keys. hope you got a deal on it, the replacement key fobs are expensive, especially with the reprogramming and everything

You don't need an proof of ownership.

How – With one programmed transmitter availabel

NOTE: A maximum of 8 key transmitters can be programmed

Insert programmed master key transmitter into ignition

Switch ignition ON

Switch ignition OFF

Remove master key transmitter

Within 10 seconds insert new key transmitter and switch ignition ON

New key transmitter now programmed

You can only do this with a brand new key, never used on a car before. As the chip can only be programmed to one car.

And be prepared. What the dealer is going to charge you is not going to be inexpensive. I wouldn't be surprised if its not clost to $300 by the time you are donw.

Buy a blank, have it cut and program it yourself, you'll save some good money.

I recently bought a used 2013 Spark LS and was only given one key. This car was bought from Hertz Car Sales. This key is not a fob key but just a simple key and it has a chip inside. If I purchase a blank can I program it through the ignition method?

Ellsworth. You can program it yourself. Just get a blank cut.

Make sure the handle of the key has a proper chip..can't program a regular key without the chip in the handle.

Is there any way to check if chevy key is blank one or with chip (I guess for engine immobilizer)? I am asking as mine spark have GM accessory remote locking system, autocop, which is an aftermarket kind. So originally with vehicle is just a pair of keys. Looking at keys I can't say if they have chip or not.
