psquare75 35
That's *exactly* what I wanted, the vacuum cleaner "choom" when goosing the gas pedal.
tommyspark 24
The Injen costs over $200. The piping cost me $11.32 at Lowes...... pretty much same end.result without the noise of the Injen
tommyspark 24
Finally had time to do the LS this morning. Here's a stock snorkel vs the bigger one pix..... STOCK
Greg_E 211
Do you think it might be a good idea to make a bracket to hold those pieces to the fender? I ask since I haven't done this mod.
Gossamer 50
Hey look! You found the horn!
Greg_E 211
Does anyone know of a metal heat exchanger that I can attach to the exhaust manifold to provide warm intake air? I'm thinking something like a big tube with fins on the inside. This would let me replace the stock flexible hose and get the warm air that helps with fuel mileage in the winter. I didn't even think about this all summer, and now the cold months are coming. Don't want to sidetrack the thread too much, but it is definitely an intake mod.
tommyspark 24
No the couplings have metal wiring in them so it's a lot more firm than you'd think. Doesn't move much if any at all. No need for brackets. I don't know about radiator hosing though

tommyspark 24
Greg I bet you could simply remove the heat shield from the manifold, and remove both snorkels from the airbox. This would provide ample hot air to the intake..... The airbox seems close enough to the manifold
tommyspark 24
That's how I did a Rover while stationed in England. Took off the heat shield and just ran the airbox without a snorkel attached. Gained about 3MPG highway. I must say the car sure did slow down a LOT after that mod though. Lost a lot of power.. but hey, it worked for gas mileage! Edited August 24, 2013 by tommyspark
tommyspark 24
Just looked at it. With the heat shield off and the "ram" snorkel removed the airbox hole would only be about 4" away from the manifold. U could fab up a short snorkel pointed down towards the manifold n that'd do the trick
Greg_E 211
That's why I was thinking I need to do this, it is so close that it should be easy to try for the winter, then switch it back to colder intake for the summer. Smikster
tommyspark 24
Should be pretty easy to accomplish.
dubsmx13 7
So i did the mod yesterday and the motor feels a tad quicker not a big change just a slight peppiness in rpm's. i extended the tube from the air box and put a screw in to keep it all nice and snug .

Chris Bemis 5
I'm 99% sure I'm going to eliminate the resonator box and route hoses to both dummy fog light holes. Cut out the fog light holes and have a dual feed "ram air". Kills two birds with one stone. I hate the dummy fog lights and also could probably free up a little mpg and maybe even some power. I have no hope for actual "ram air" effect, but it will be cold, pressurized air getting to the filter. The driver side will be a pretty direct path, but the passenger side will be pretty curvy and likely, pretty small. But, I am a guy that needs symmetry and I'm not going to have an open fog light hole on the drivers side and a dummy hole on the passenger side. lilgreenmachine and Smikster
psquare75 35
We just did this on my father's LS. Removed the resonator. Why are you guys even bothering making a tube/etc? Just plug that hole. With it open, the car is MUCH louder outside when you launch from a standing start.. kinda cool.
Chris Bemis 5
Well, I just read that cold air reduces mpg, so I'm now rethinking the cold air / ram air setup.

Especially when it gets really cold.....
psquare75 35
Right. The little box everyone is removing is sealed, as far as we could see. Meaning, it's ONLY there for noise.
Chris Bemis 5
Guys, do a little research on the resonator. Apparently, they are NOT just for noise. That is just a side effect. They are actually for air harmonics that contribute to efficiency. If you want to increase power (on a car with 85 hp, really?) or noise, I guess remove it, but I'm keeping mine on. http://www.ehow.com/info_12156112_air-intake-resonator-do.html I bought this car 100% for the mileage. psquare75 35
For the 20 minutes it takes to do, try it with and without.
malibuguy 14
However it has a cotton/paper baffle that voes between the resonator and the airbox suggesting it is tuned just for noise. And to prove it...we have been averaging 1-2mpg better with the mod along with improved acceleration.
Chris Bemis 5
Well, if people are really getting better mileage because of doing this, I'll try it.
